The maximum size each image is shown beside the photo as shown below but you may order smaller sizes to suit your requirements as determined by the price and the guide to image sizes below. Guide to Image Sizes
To determine the required image size for digital displays or printers, you need to know two things:
- density, in pixels or dots per inch or centimetre, say D
- image size in inches or centimeters, say X wide and Y high.
Then the required image size is width: = X multiplied by D; and height = Y multiplied by D.
Typical densities are 100 dots per inch (dpi) for displays and 200-300 dpi for printers, where an inch is approximately 2.5cm. You can convert from dots per inch, dpi, to dots per centimetres, dpc, by multiplying dpi by 0.4 (100dpi = 40dpc). The table below calculates the required image width in pixels for different examples of display/print sizes in inches and centimetres at these 3 densities.
Required Size, X or Y |
Image Size at D = 100dpi |
Image Size at D = 200dpi |
Image Size at D = 300dpi |
---|---|---|---|
4in/10cm | 400px | 800px | 1,200px |
8in/20cm | 800px | 1,600px | 2,400px |
12in/30cm | 1,200px | 2,400px | 3,600px |
16in/40cm | 1,600px | 3,200px | 4,800px |
Note that software such as Photoshop can increase image sizes by resampling. As a general guide, a sharp image large enough to be printed at 200dpi can safely be resampled to print at 300 or 400dpi. Use the contact link at the bottom of the page to email Ian if you have any questions about image sizes for your project.
Conditions for Free Use
Ian permits free use of photos for personal use only. Images may not be reproduced, digitally or in print, or transmitted to third parties, without permission. You may, of course, forward images to friends or family for their personal use. You may also use images downloaded from the Birdway website on personal websites on two conditions:
- The copyright watermark "© Ian Montgomery birdway.com.au" is left intact (you may move it if you want to crop the image).
- You provide a live (clickable) link to http://www.birdway.com.au associated with the image.
Copy images that you wish to use to your own website rather than linking directly to images in the Birdway site in case Ian moves or deletes them.
Ian gets requests for free use of images and will agree to this if the project meets ALL of the following conditions:
- Non-commercial use: the product must not be for sale; and
- the project should be unfunded; and
- the project supports conservation and/or education.
An unfunded project is one done by volunteer(s) without any financial support such as grants.
