Polytypic Purple-backed Fairywren is split from monotypic, nonsister Variegated Fairywren based on studies of narrow hybrid zone with limited gene flow (McLean et al. 2012, 2017). Split recognised (at October 2018) by IOC and eBird but not (yet) by BirdLife.
